UPDATE 06 OCTOBER 2009 Halloween Calls to the police about anti-social behaviour have traditionally tended to increase during October and November, the Halloween and fireworks season. Not everyone enjoys Halloween and the anti-social behaviour that comes from people playing pranks. The message is simple, have fun but if your behaviour is anti-social, it won't be tolerated. Some guidelines for people planning to trick or treat are: · Parents or a responsible adult should always accompany children to make sure they stay safe · Parents should identify neighbours who are willing to have "trick or treat" calls and make them aware you plan to call · Discuss what tricks are acceptable with your children · Trick or treating is an activity for very young children and parents should discourage older children and teenagers. As a general rule, if youngsters are old enough to trick or treat on their own, they are too old to do it. · Keep your tricks within the law - anything that results in damage is an offence and will be dealt with as such. Do NOT approach houses with the 'NO Trick or Treating' signs. They are there for a reason. Always keep to well-lit areas.- Wear bright clothing and always carry a torch. - Remember road safety Lastly, Do not answer the door to unexpected or uninvited callers keep doors and windows closed and locked at all times of the day and night Bonfire Night Fireworks in the run up to Bonfire night, people who are thinking of playing with fireworks this year could get their fingers burned in more ways than one. It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18 years of age. Maximum penalty of £5000 and/or six months in prison It is illegal to set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am (Bonfire night extended until 12 midnight) It is illegal for a member of the public to possess a "display" style firework (Category 4 fireworks, can only be used by professionals) It is illegal to let off any firework in a public place and this carries a fine of up to £5000. Police may also issue an £80 Fixed Penalty Notice All fireworks sold to the public must comply to British Safety Standard BS 7114 The Police have the power to stop and search anyone suspected of carrying fireworks The sale of bangers, mini rockets, fireworks that fly erratically (Squibs, helicopters etc), aerial shells and maroons is illegal Fireworks can only be stored for private use for up to 14 days, subject to them being stored in a safe place It is illegal to cause unnecessary suffering to animals with fireworks. Maximum penalty £5000 and/or six months in prison NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Northamptonshire West - 22.09.09 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COMMUNITY MESSAGING - Northamptonshire West - 31/07/09 BT Service Scam We would like to advise you of information regarding a telephone fraud (received via a Police Operation being carried out by Norfolk Police. A professional sounding adult male phones the victim (victims chosen are listed in the phone directory) stating he is calling from BT Collection Service because money is owed to BT. The caller states that the (victims) bank has stopped the Direct Debit and that money is immediately owed else the phone will be cut off. The amount that is allegedly 'owed' has been less than £10 (typically £9 ). The caller requires the victims credit card details so that payment can be made. The caller also 'proves' he can easily cut off the victims phone telling them to hang up and try dialling out. It is then believed he puts them on 'hold' so that the line is still connected but of course the victim believes their line has been disconnected. The offender then 'phones them back and again attempts to obtain their credit card detail. The main object is not the £9 but is to obtain the credit card data. The caller is described as very professional sounding" Keep your property secure at all times. It's important that all your doors and windows are locked. It's very important to remember that if your not expecting anyone, you must not open that door until you are sure they are genuine. Please can we ask all residents to pass on the following message to all friends, relatives and neighbours. We would ask all residents to stay vigilant and remember to report any suspicious activity using the dedicated NHW number 01604 432 436, alternatively contact Northamptonshire West Police on 03000 111 222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting WB/CMS/438/09 The School Holidays (july 2009) usually bring an increase in the number of crimes affecting school buildings and equipment. We would ask all residents to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity or vehicles close to or on school sites at all times of the day or night. If you see anything that arouses your suspicion, please report using the dedicated Neighbourhood Watch line 01604 432436, alternatively contact Northamptonshire West Police or Crimestoppers on the numbers below quoting reference WB/CMS/382/09. Please pass the details of this message, onto any friends and neighbours, especially if there is a school where you live. CRIMESTOPPERS STRIKE AGAIN (June 2009) - Eight people were arrested in Northamptonshire during June as a result of information passed to Crimestoppers. During the month, 62 pieces of actionable information were passed on to Northamptonshire Police by Crimestoppers and these led directly to eight arrests and five charges for various criminal offences across the county. Police are keen to encourage even more people to call the charity - which is completely independent of any law enforcement organisation - to pass on information that they would be reluctant to give to the police. The police rely on people coming forward with information about crime and criminals but know that for a variety of reasons, not everyone is comfortable with calling the police. Crimestoppers offers people a way of passing on anything that they know without fear of being identified. The police never find out who has supplied the information and never try to find out, the Police simply take action on any crime that is identified. Chair of Northamptonshire Crimestoppers Roger Nicklin said: "Having just taken over the Chair of Northamptonshire Crimestoppers I am delighted to note that calls to our Contact Centre continue to increase. However, not all people realise that Crimestoppers is an independent charity and is not part of the Police Service. Calls to 0800 555 111 will always be personally answered, callers are totally anonymous, and we cannot trace calls or know who is calling. This means that callers cannot be identified to the police and will not be interviewed or asked to give evidence. If you have any concerns that someone in your community is involved in crime please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Lighten Up! -Be aware of distraction Burglaries! (November 2007) -Unfortunatley whilst England were playing at Wembley last week one of the residents in Charlton experienced a two people breaking into her home, sitting silently watching the match, two invaders forced a front door and made entry. The police have leads and consider this to be a random attack because the property was dark and appeared as if occupants were out -the description of these individuals were of Eastern European origin. DO NOT OPEN your door to anyone you do not know! -especially those selling door to door! Please be extra careful as we approach the holidays, not to show anything of value looking through windows and the police recommend that when leaving your property leave some lights on and even consider buying some timer switchs that will operate random lighting -it will be less expensive to use some electricity than to be faced with replacing something valuable or repairs these criminals cause -or the fright of being face to face with them! Got an urgent problem but don't know who to call? - Well, if you call Police with a non-police related emergency from July 3, you'll be bounced to Boing. New laws which came into force on 18 September will place a new responsibility on parents to make sure that children up to 135 cms in height (approximately 4ft 5ins) or up to 12 years of age use an appropriate child restraint. The detailed rules are: · Children under 135cms and under 12 years old must use the appropriate child car seat in a vehicle . · Drivers are legally responsible for ensuring children under 14 use seat belts or child restraints in cars and goods vehicles. Those 14 years and above are legally responsible for themselves. · Rear-facing baby seats must not be used in a seat protected by a frontal air-bag unless it has been deactivated.
