(26 FEBRUARY)
PTFA Book Appeal -
The PTFA is asking for donations towards a book for the school library which they will then match. We are aiming to have the library built by December 2010 (see below) and in order for it to meet the requirements for a primary school library, it needs to have at least 2,000 books! Of course this is not going to happen in a year, but we are trying to build up our resources now so that we have some books ready to catalogue when the project is finished.

If you would like to make a donation, there is form with the newsletter which you can complete and return to school. When a donation is made, a book will be bought and an acknowledgement made in the form of a plate which will be stuck to the inside of the book. If you would not like an acknowledgement, you can indicate this on the form. The acknowledgements will help parents and children find “their” book when it is added to the library.

Later in the year we are planning to have another book appeal which will include a list of books the school could use: these could be new or excellent condition/virtually new second hand. This list will help avoid duplication and ensure the children have the appropriate reading material. Again, any books donated will be acknowledged. Your support with this, as always, is very much appreciated. Thank you.

Pupil Fundraising -
Haiti - Over the past few weeks Megan and Ceiwen Willmer have managed to raise £55 for Haiti which is wonderful. They would like to thank everyone who made a donation.
Wamono - On Saturday last week, Beatrice Berrill organised a coffee morning in Aynho Village Hall which raised £180. All the proceeds are being donated to Wamono for their water tank. Beatrice would also like to thank everyone who came to the coffee morning or who made a donation towards it. These girls should be very proud of the initiative and effort they have shown.

Water for Wamono: Lent Project by School Council
Just a reminder that we are asking families to give up bottled water or something else for Lent and to donate the money saved to the water tank for Wamono. I have already put over £5 in my pot which was a bit of a shock as I hadn’t realised how much I spend a week on bottled water! And the tap water isn’t all that different. Thanks for your support in this.

Value of the Week -
Last week the children were working on being resourceful. Next week the focus is on respecting our surroundings, which includes looking after our property and the school’s property.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers -
We are taking part in the Sainsbury’s Active Kids voucher scheme again which runs from 17th February 2010 until 8th June 2010. Please forward any vouchers to the School office. Thank you for your support.

NOTICES - A Police scheme to crack down on bicycle theft is coming to Brackley.
Members of the Brackley Safer Community Team will be on hand to security code people’s bikes. The coding costs £3 and includes a log book and registration on the website HYPERLINK "http://www.bikeregister.com" www.bikeregister.com  Police staff will mark the bikes with a subtle, individual code. The owner’s details are then registered on the website with that code. If the bike is stolen/lost and then found it can then be reunited with the correct owner. If the current owner of the bike wishes to sell it then the details registered with the website can be easily changed. The code marked on the bike cannot be removed making the security marking a good crime prevention device. You don’t need an appointment to have your bike marked, just turn up at the Town Hall on Saturday, 6 March between 1pm and 3pm.

Quiz and Curry Night
Last Saturday’s Quiz and Curry Night was a great success, raising £536 for the PTFA. Thank you to everyone who helped out, particularly Helen Backon who was “chief organiser”. She and Amanda Leigh cooked an outstanding meal for us all. Thank you also to Kate Darby and Di Sheasby for organising the quiz – questions and all – and Paul Bradford for being such a great quiz master. It was a really fun evening and the hard work which goes into these events is very much appreciated.

Mothers Day Service – at school -Next Friday, Achievers’ Assembly will be replaced with a Mothers’ Day service here at the school. Father Roger will be leading it and we hope you are able to join us.

Talent Show - The School Council has organised a Talent Show for Friday 26th March. It will start at 2pm and should be no longer than an hour. The cost to enter the show is £1 per person. Parents are of course invited to attend but as this is a fundraiser, the council is asking for 50p per person (not including small children) at the door. With this newsletter is a form to complete if your child is going to perform in the show and the £1 can be attached with this. Thank you.

Padlock on Gate - Some of you may be aware that the government has been tightening up on what is known as “safeguarding procedures”. This is to do with child protection and covers everything from criminal record checks to risk assessments to school security. Many schools around the country are having on-the-spot inspections to do with safeguarding and it is a key focus in the new Ofsted inspection framework. Our school site is not as secure as it could be. The fence around the playground is very low and the gate permitting access is not locked. Therefore, in order to ensure we are meeting minimum guidelines, a padlock will now be on the back school gate which will be locked during school hours and after the children have gone home at the end of the day. I and the governors realise that people can still hop over the fence if they really want access to the playground, but we need to do whatever we can (however small) to help improve security on site.

Trips and Visitors - Next Tuesday Years 1 and 2 are off to Warwick Castle for the day as part of their work on Castles. Thank you to the PTFA who contributed £250 towards the trip in order to keep costs to a minimum. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, the Police Community Support Officers will be in school to talk to each class about “Stranger Danger”.

Value of the Week - Last week the children were working on respecting their surroundings and this has been immensely successful. There are far fewer coats lying on the floor and many children are making an effort to put away their equipment away after lessons and playtimes. We will be carrying this over into next week before starting a new set of values.

Top Gear Cards - The latest craze on the playground over the past couple of weeks has been the trading of Top Gear cards. While we don’t have any issues with the children doing this, we have had to establish some guidelines in order to avoid the conflicts and problems we were dealing with the previous week. Therefore at the beginning of the week, we agreed the following with the children:

They may bring their cards to school to trade at playtime. If the cards are found to be out during lesson time, they will be confiscated.
Children bring cards to school at their own risk. If they are lost or taken, it is not the school’s responsibility.
If a card is traded, it is traded. So one needs to be absolutely certain they want to part with a card before agreeing to a trade.
As a result of this, we have not had the disputes and upsets of the previous week.

School Dinners - Just to keep you updated on school dinners: first of all, thank you for your input with respect to the provider (county or locally sourced). Most of you were reluctant to pay more than £2 a day for a school dinner. Also, the county will provide us with a mini regeneration kitchen. So we have decided to still go with the county hot school meal plan. A surveyor was here last week to work out where to locate the kitchen pod, which proved quite difficult as we still haven’t had the final plans through from the architects for the last phase of the building project. Once we have had those, we can decide where to put the pod.

I understand there has been some concern about who is paying for the kitchen pod. The money for this is coming directly from the county and it is ONLY for schools who have agreed to use the county council as their hot meal provider. We would not get the money otherwise. This is not something which is funded out of the school budget.

World Book Day - Yesterday was World Book Day and the children really got into the spirit of it. We had all sorts of interesting characters. To name a few: Wendy in Peter Pan; the Cat in the Hat; The Hungry Caterpillar; Harry Potter; James Bond; the Queen of Hearts; Puss in Boots; Frodo from the Hobbit; the Mad Hatter... the costumes were truly wonderful and we hope to get some of the photos on the school website by the end of next week.
Classes 2 and 4 spent Thursday morning writing their books and the Reception children have been to Magdalen this morning to take part in a performing stories activity – again organised by the cluster.
Thank you to everyone who gave a donation for a book for the school library. It is very much appreciated.

Parents’ Evenings - A letter about Parents’ Evenings went out last Friday with appointment times and should have been returned today. If you have still not returned your slip, could you please do so as soon as possible. If your child has an Individual Education Plan, there was an additional appointment slip for you to see Mrs Hawes and me at a different time (this is in addition to your appointment at Parents’ Evening). If you have not received these letters, please contact the school office as soon as possible. Thank you.

Water for Wamono: Lent Project by School Council - Just a reminder that we are asking families to give up bottled water or something else for Lent and to donate the money saved to the water tank for Wamono. I have now put £9 in my pot, slightly less than last week. Thanks for your support in this.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers/Tesco for Schools and Clubs Please forward any vouchers to the School office. Thank you for your support.

St George’s Day Event - When we return from the Easter holidays, the children will be starting a whole school project on Medieval Times. The topic focus for two weeks will be on Medieval Times and the curriculum will be based on that.
As part of this topic, we have arranged for the Knights of Middle England to visit the school on St George’s Day. They will have short workshops based on how to be a knight where the children will learn sword fighting skills; the history of knights; how knights lived etc. The day will finish with a jousting show at the Playing Fields which parents are welcome to attend.

We haven’t finalised the timetable for the day as Croughton School is also joining us and we are not meeting with them until Monday to go through the details. But I thought I would give you plenty of notice as the children will need to come to school that day dressed in Medieval wear. The PTFA has kindly paid for the Knights of Middle England, so there will be no cost to parents for this. This should be a really exciting day and I hope many of you are able to join us for the show.

PTFA News - Bags2School - The PTFA would like to thank all the parents and children that contributed to our Bags to School collection last week we collected 681 kilos which raised £272.40.  Thank you for holding onto your clothing due to the weather postponement in January.

Quiz and Curry Night - A BIG thank you to all the parents that came to the Curry & Quiz Evening last Saturday and made it such fun. It was a great team effort but particular thanks need to go to Kate Darby and Diana Sheasby for a brilliant quiz, Paul Bradford for keeping us all in line and Helen Backon, Amanda Leigh, Tim Brown and the Howells for the delicious curries.  A great night was had by all and we have raised £536. The winning table was the Teachers Table - the team included Miss Dean, Bruce, Nicola & Mrs Gladden, Rebecca, Vanessa & Alex Wilde, Steffi Bradford & Liz Short – well done.

Monthly Draw for February 2010 - The winner receiving a cheque for £25 is Mrs Emma Bray with the number 21. Please see Katja Bennet if you would like to have a number in the draw, it’s not too late to join!
