Memorials for Charlton Cemetery


The Parochial Church Council and the Vicar are responsible to the Diocese for the upkeep
of the Cemetery.   Churchyard regulations have been strengthened in recent years to ensure
that memorials harmonise with their surroundings.

If you are considering having a headstone made for a grave, it is important to get the permission
of the Vicar who can let you have a copy of the regualtions and an application form.

MEMORIALS

Size of Headstones : 2'6" to 4'0" high 1'8" and 3" thick
Memorial Stones to cover ashes should be not more than 2'0" square.

Memorials should be made of natural stone (local stone preferred) slate or hardwood.

Black, Blue and Red Granite are not permitted, neither are synthetic stone, plastic
or photographs on headstones.

No surface of the stone may be finished with a polished honed or refecting surface.

There should be no kerbs, chippings or shrubs as all graves wil be mown.

Each headstone may have up to two receptacles for flowers, and bulbs and wild
flowers may be planted on the grave if the family wish.

Inscriptions should be simple and reverent and the wording of the inscription must
be included in the application.
