New number for Northamptonshire Police

Northamptonshire Police has introduced a new countywide telephone number for the public to use
when making non-emergency calls. As of Thursday 1 December 2005 the new number for all
non-emergency calls to the Force is: 08453 700700.

An automated call handling system was introduced at the same time, giving callers who know
the extension number they need, the chance to key it in. This will speed things up for them,
and allow other calls to be answered more quickly as well.

Staff in the Customer Contact Centre answered 288,775 non-emergency calls last year –
791 calls each day. Currently there are five local numbers in existence, depending on where
you live in the county, all feeding in to a central switchboard. Northamptonshire Police hope
that the introduction of the new number will make things easier for the public, with just one
number to remember wherever in the county they are calling from.

It will also make things simpler for people when the four policing Areas merge into two later this year.

The new telephone number – 08453 700700 - is charged at the normal local rate and will
continue be answered by call handlers in the Force Communications Centre.

The existing local numbers will gradually be phased out but will still connect to Police
for the time being, until people become used to the new number.

There is, of course, no change to the 999 number for emergency calls.

Te new number will be promoted across the county to ensure it becomes widely known.

"Bonjour Brackley" from the Continental Market

Brackley recently had its first visit from the continental market and those who visited the stalls were treated to a
variety of continental delicacies and goods. From cheeses to chocolate, the choice was as varied as it was delicious.

The traditional french baguettes were snapped up as were the choccies and biscuits. It was encouraging to see a large
turnout of customers for the event and thankfully the traditional British rainy weather held off.

Hopefully it will not be too long before the market passes through again.

"NEW LOCAL NATURE RESERVE FOR NORTHAMPTON"

Storton's Pits in Northampton has been officially declared a local nature reserve. Local nature reserve status
recognises the area's importance as an area of nature conservation value.

Storton's Pits becomes the sixth local nature reserve in Northampton and will be managed by
the Northamptonshire Wildlife Trust on behalf of Northampton Borough Council, and the
landowner, English Partnerships. The Wildlife Trust will be responsible for managing the area in
accordance with their management plan, and opening it up for educational projects.

The designation came as a result of the Brownfield Initiative being undertaken by Northampton
Borough Council and English Partnerships. As part of a planning agreement relating to the
construction of the new Southern Development Link Road from Sixfields to Harvey Reeves Road,
funds have been made available for the creation of the nature reserve and for a ten year management programme.

"BT QUADRUPLES BROADBAND SPEED TO 2MB FOR FREE"

BT this month announced a transformation of its Retail broadband services. Customers will be able to
work faster and download information quicker than ever before and at no extra cost.

The move will mean BT's 1.4 million retail broadband customers will transfer to a new super-fast
standard. Most consumer and business customers will have their speed increased up to 2 Mb
– as much as four times faster than current speeds. Those with BT Broadband Basic will have
their speed increased from 512k up to 1 Mb.

Ian Livingston, CEO for BT Retail said: "BT is about giving value for money. Today we are
offering customers up to four times the broadband speed without charging a penny more.
It will allow customers to get even more from their broadband services for entertainment,
education or communication."

These higher speeds will pave the way for new services such as video-over-broadband and
also allow customers to get more from multiple connections. This will be ideal for families, for
example, allowing them to simultaneously connect a PC, laptop, games console, or other
internet-enabled device.

Livingston added: "The internet is no longer simply about surfing the web or checking email.
More and more people are enjoying online gaming, on-demand music and video over the net.
BT is bringing applications of the future – such as video telephony – within reach of all our customers today.

"Today's announcement will also help businesses maximise the massive opportunities offered
by on-line trading and teleworking. We fully appreciate the critical nature of broadband for
business, so in addition to 2Mb as standard, we are introducing a service level guarantee
on our premium business product.

"BT believes that UK consumers and businesses deserve to get the full benefit today of
tomorrow's broadband applications and services. It's time to get the most from the internet."

New speeds will become effective for new consumer customers from February 17 and for new
business customers from April 1. Migration of existing customers will start from the same dates.
